But this leaves Dobrev free to try out alternatives in the world of dating before she settles down with "the one". I don't even want to imagine a finale where BOTH the Salvatores die! "I think she had it set up the right way". "I live through the finale!' Because they hadn't seen it yet".
Kevin and co-creator Julie Plec revealed earlier this week that they originally planned to have Elena and Stefan reunite before Nina chose to leave the show in Season 6, as they teased that there original plan was to have the character try to reconcile with the other brother prior to Dobrev's leaving.
Julie Plec told the Hollywood Reporter, "We do have crossover elements in the upcoming season of The Originals that's about to start airing, and it all brings it back to what I see as a future for either The Originals or another piece of the franchise to launch off of the end of The Originals".
It was this ending Plec envisioned and was going to make happen until Nina Dobrev left the show. At this time, it is still unsure if Plec will decide to release a potential "The Vampire Diaries" Season 9 in the coming years. "In that moment, to me, the show ceased to be about a love triangle and became a show about the power of these brothers and their love for each other".
"[It] sealed the romantic contract between Damon and Elena", Julie said. Once Nina left the show, all the plans of how it would end one day had to shift because ultimately it became less about ensuring Elena's safety and future and more about the relationships between the brothers themselves and their own path to redemption. "And so there was no way in hell I was killing both of them and leaving neither of them with the happy ending".
Before "Klaroline" fans get too excited, however, Plec explained that they will not have their moment in "The Originals" Season 4. Would this series finale have worked better? We may still be sobbing over Stefan's self-sacrifice ― and Caroline's heartbreak ― but at least Bonnie, Matt, Alaric, Elena and Damon got the happy endings they deserved.
In fact, the return of Elena Gilbert in "The Vampire Diaries" created media hype since she was one of the biggest names in the series. If this is the case, there is a possibility that the actress will join a second spin-off show which will center on the character of Caroline Forbes.
