Kantar: Windows Mobile sales market share drops to 1.3% in the US

As if Windows Phone fans needed yet another reminder of the status of their platform, a new Kantar report is calling for a two-OS world, with no mention of Windows Phone in the plans.

Kantar said the new Nokia Android smartphones introduced last month by Finnish start-up HMD Global could present a challenge to China's Huawei whose mid-range devices have been popular in Europe.

In perhaps even more grim news for Windows Phone loyalists, Kantar's report indicated that Windows Phone share of the U.S. smartphone market is just 1.3%, for a total year-over-year (YoY) loss of 1.3%. It registered slower growth in Europe where it just went up by 1.4% to reach 74.3% in the third quarter.

The only place where iOS grows and Android loses points is the United States market. Apple and Samsung rule seventy percent of the U.S. domestic market.

With numerous new smartphones announced at MWC not headed to the USA for now, this looks unlikely to change in the near future. However, in the USA, the region is nearly dominated by three major mobile phone brands that constitute four-fifths of total sales.

Nothing much is changing in the US, where just three brands take home more than four-fifths of all sales.

It is worth noting that Nokia has a loyal fanbase in Europe and with its new lineup of Android phones coming up in the region, we can expect an increase in Android stats. At the beginning of 2016, Nokia accounted for 6% of smartphones sold across the EU5, making it the fourth largest brand at the time.

In the report, Kantar also notes that iPhone 7 remains the highest grosser in the large markets.

Kantar Worldpanel published its report on the smartphone market for the three months ending in January 2017, and the numbers are clear - Android and iOS are the only players left on the field, while Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS are quickly disappearing.

What's also interesting is that the USA smartphone market is dominated by three brands.

But Kantar said that both Apple and Xiaomi continued to experience year-on-year declines because of increased competition from rising Chinese vendors Oppo and Vivo.
