National Conference (NC) president and former union minister Farooq Abdullah today filed his nomination for the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat at the office of Deputy Commissioner Srinagar. As per the Election Commission notification, last date of filing nominations for Srinagar constituency has been fixed on March 21, while scrutiny of papers will be held on March 22.
Congress and NC are fighting the LS by-polls jointly.
PDP candidate Nazir Ahmad Khan accompanied by his party leaders including Muzaffar Baig filed his papers ahead of Farooq. Karra, who defeated Abdullah in 2014 general Lok Sabha polls later joined the Congress after resigning from PDP.
The elections will be held amid simmering tensions in the Valley with the political parties finding it hard to reach out to the people and campaign for their candidates as the Hurriyat has appealed for complete boycott of the election.
The by-election to Srinagar constituency has been necessitated by the resignation of Tariq Hamid Karra from the Lok Sabha in September previous year in a mark of protest against alleged "brutalities" on protesters.
