A college student who father was killed while rescuing people in the September 11 attacks has died from choking during a pancake-eating competition.

The student, Caitlin Nelson, was participating in a Greek life charity event when the freak accident occurred, reports the Connecticut Post.

Nelson suffered from several food allergies, police say, and these allergies may have contributed to the choking episode.

Kalamaras told the AP two nearby nursing students immediately started performing lifesaving measures when Nelson began to choke, and were joined by on scene police and paramedics. By the time police officers arrived four minutes later Nelson was unconscious and not breathing. On Friday, Nelson was transferred to Columbia University Medical Center.

Nelson's father, James Nelson, was a Port Authority of NY and New Jersey police officer killed in the September 11 attacks in Manhattan. His obituary said he was survived by two daughters, 11-year-old Anne and 5-year-old Caitlin.

Caitlin Nelson, a native of Clark, N.J., succumbed at a New York City hospital.

Nelson was taken to a hospital in Bridgeport, Conn., then later transferred to Columbia Medical Center in NY, where she died.

Caitlin Nelson was a social work major at Sacred Heart. She was later transported to New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center and died three days later on Sunday, April 2. Nelson had multiple food allergies and was choking during the contest, according to a story in the Connecticut Post. "Like her father, who gave everything he possibly could so others could live right up until the end, Caitlin just did the same thing".

Nelson's vital organs have already been collected for donation purposes.

Thousands of people gathered on the Sacred Heart campus Sunday night to remember Caitling, a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. "They did the best to establish an airway", Fairfield police Lt.

An autopsy is pending to determine Nelson's cause of death.
