SJ Res. 34 to be signed by Trump: ends internet privacy guidelines

Republicans and industry officials complained that the browsing and app history restrictions would have unfairly burdened internet providers, since other companies such as Google and Facebook don't have to abide by them. Consumers cannot remove personal data from the hands of Internet service providers, but they can make it harder to collect. Websites that use addresses beginning with HTTPS provide encrypted communications to protect the transferred content.

A similar vote in the Senate last week struck down the measures, planned to be enforced by the end of this year.

This will be a major loss for consumers as broadband providers like Comcast, AT&T will be able to sell your personal information to the highest bidder without your permission.

The Republican-led Senate had voted 50 to 48 last week to reverse the privacy rules passed last October under the US Freedom Act during the administration of former President Barack Obama.

The White House said it "strongly supports" the repeal. But opponents see the bill as a handout to corporate entities like Comcast and Time Warner at the expense of internet users, which is why they are hoping to convince President Trump to use the first veto of his presidency to return the bill to Congress.

Republicans in favor of the bill said companies like Google already have access to the information, and not allowing internet service providers the same creates unfair discrepancies.

Now the legislation is being sent to President Donald Trump, who is a strong supporter of the move, according to Reuters. He and other Republicans want a different federal agency, the Federal Trade Commission, to police privacy for both broadband companies like AT&T and internet companies like Google. "Appropriately, Congress has passed a resolution to reject this approach of picking winners and losers before it takes effect". But broadband providers said the rule favoured certain companies. In past cases, broadband providers voluntarily stopped their most blatant tracking and interception activity after loud public complaints.

Team Logic experts said there are ways to limit what ISPs can spy on, such as putting your device on airplane mode, powering down when you're not using your device and clearing your internet browsing history. In doing so, the door will be open for ISPs to do anything they like with the data of U.S. citizens. The FCC promulgated a rule that requires the ISP to give you a choice of whether you want this information shared with third parties.
