Equal Pay Day Is Reminder of Existing Wage Gap

Today is Equal Pay Day because, according to the National Committee on Pay Equity, April 4th is how far women have to work into 2017 to earn what men did in 2016. The Department of Labor reports women working full time made 79.6 percent of men's earnings in 2015, or 79.6 cents of every dollar a white man made - an increase of 19.4 percent compared to 1980.

Those figures are part of an analysis released a day before Equal Pay Day, which advocates say illustrates the national gap between what men and women earn.

Alabama's wage gap amounts to $10,747 a year. African American women on average earn only 63 cents and Latina women on average earn only 54 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men. "[What ] a man earns [by] December 31, it takes the woman until April 4 to catch up to what they made". "Driving the wage gaps in certain states is occupational segregation", she said. But, unfortunately, the pay gap is even greater for women of color.

Making about 20-percent less than men at this point in the year for the same job, it would have been like those women were working for free.

That loss is a brutal blow to the more than 271,000 Alabama households headed by women, 37 percent of which are living in poverty. Because women earn less on average, they must work longer for the same pay. Companies will also be encouraged to publish "action plans" showing how they will attempt to close any gaps.

Davenport says one way women can get ahead is to negotiate higher salaries.

April 4 is "Equal Pay Day" and the organizations are hoping to draw attention to the inequities in compensation and give a boost to the Paycheck Fairness Act, which members of Congress were expected to reintroduce Tuesday.

Equal Pay Day is also always on a Tuesday. Where hopefully soon we will be celebrating women being paid the same as men for the same work.

The regulations will cover approximately 9,000 employers comprising more than 15m employees, representing almost half of the UK's workforce.
