Ousted South Korea President Park Geun-Hye Arrested, Jailed

Ousted South Korean President Park Geun-hye arrives at the Seoul Central District Court for hearing on a prosecutors’ request for her arrest for corruption in Seoul South Korea Thursday

The Seoul court's decision is yet another humiliating blow for Park, South Korea's first female president, who was elected in 2012 amid overwhelming support from conservatives, who recall her dictator father as a hero who lifted the country from poverty in the 1960s and '70s despite a record of severe human rights abuses.

Prosecutors also said it was fair to arrest her since all other key suspects in the scandal have been arrested.

Park Geun-hye entered the Seoul Detention Center in a black sedan before dawn Friday after a court approved her arrest on corruption allegations.

A court determined Park remain held so authorities can question her and preserve evidence.

Companies approached for money last November by Park's long-time friend Choi Soon-sil included Samsung, Hyundai, SK Group and the LG Group. Officials for the facility have said Park will be expected to adhere to the existing rules in place at the centre.

The former president was stripped of her immunity when she was dismissed from office by the country's top court earlier this month. A district court normally issues a ruling within six months of an indictment, the AP reported.

Choi is charged with extorting tens of millions of dollars from scores of conglomerates to establish two non-profit foundations she used for personal gains.

"Traitor Park was. thrown into a solitary cell in a prisoner uniform", the state KCNA news agency said, adding her detention was "welcomed" by South Korean media and a "majority of the people".

Both Park and Choi deny any wrongdoing.

United States unleashes 'mother of all bombs' for first time in Afghanistan
On Friday, the village was swarming with Afghan and worldwide troops, as helicopters and other aircraft flew overhead. Former president of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai was among the first ones to condemn the attack.

Gathering in streets near Seoul City Hall, Park's supporters, many of them in their sixties or older, chanted: "Release President Park Geun-hye" and "Disband the National Assembly".

Choi is accused of extracting a total of $70 million from major businesses on the promise that they would get favorable treatment from Park's government.

"With Park now in custody., the next step for state prosecutors is to investigate her former senior secretary for civil affairs, Woo Byung-woo, one of the officials accused of playing a significant role in the power abuse scandal". If Ms Park is convicted of all 13 of her charges, she could face up to 45 years in prison.

Looking grim-faced and pale, Park ignored a barrage of press flashbulbs and did not speak when she arrived at the Seoul Central District Court earlier in the day, nor when she left.

The former leader, who has denied the accusations, was grilled for almost nine hours by the judge.

Some tried to break through police barricades in an effort to stop the passage of her four-car convoy, which was broadcast live on television.

The liberal Democratic Party, which is favourite to win the election on May 9 to choose Park's successor, said in a statement that the move showed "all are equal before the law".

Park is now held inside a detention facility where former Samsung executive Jay Y. Lee (Lee Jae-yong) is also put in custody. Park Geun-hye served as first lady after her mother's death.
