Another three students were rescued by local fisherfolk. While three students were rescued, 19 swam to safety.

The principal of the engineering college to which the students belong spoke with reporters later and said that all the 50 students went on this trip without permission from the college authorities.

The deceased have been identified as Mujmin Aniker, Kiran Hirappa Khandekar, Arti Chavan, Avadhoot Tahsildar, Nitin Mutnalkar, Karuna Berde, Maya Kolhe, Mahesh Kuduchkar (teacher), a police official attached to Malvan police station said. The condition of Sanket Gaadvi, Anita Haanli and Akanksha Ghadge is said to be serious.

Due to high tide, the water current started to pull them in, which resulted in the drowning of 8 students.

Eight bodies, including those of three girls, were recovered.

"Three students were brought to shore by the police in an unconscious state".

According to information available from the police, the group of 45 students of Maratha Engineering college of Belgaum had come for picnic here.
