Apple is Now Licensed to Test Self-Driving Cars in California

As per information released by California DMV, Apple has been granted permit for three vehicles for autonomous driving.

The DMV has granted dozens of companies the rights to operate self-driving cars in California. But a few months later, Uber filed all the appropriate paperwork anyway and is now permitted to test its technology on California roads.

As of Friday, the list includes 30 companies, with Volkswagen Group of America, Mercedes Benz, Google, Delphi Automotive and Tesla Motors as the earliest entities receiving the permit.

All autonomous technology makers must apply for and be granted permission to test a vehicle on public roads from the DMV. Apple has remained secretive about its self-driving project.

Given the scale of manufacturing you need to build your own cars, the odds would be stronger in favour of Apple as a software provider to existing manufacturers in the future.

Apple is believed to have started work on its driverless cars project, codenamed Project Titan, in 2014, and has hired ignificant figures from automotive companies including Ford, Tesla and Volkswagan in the past few years.

In December, Apple had already written to the US Federal Road Safety Agency (NHTSA) to advise on draft guidelines for stand-alone cars.

The California-based tech giant is expected to focus on software systems, letting partners manufacture vehicles, but would understandably want to be able to test its navigation technology in cars. Apple executives have never spoken at length about the company's effort in the space, but a number of leaks provide a glimpse at what the company is up to.

Apple was not immediately available for comment.

He had mentioned, following a $ 1 billion investment made in the spring in the Chinese auto booking company with driver Didi, "strategic things that the two companies can do together over time".

They are also required to submit regular reports outlining any accidents that happen during testing and times that drivers turn off a vehicle's autonomous systems during a test.
