Assad: Chemical attack in Syria is '100 percent fabrication'

He then goes on to question the entire attack saying that "it's not clear whether it happened or not", and adding that the Syrian government gave up the country's chemical arsenals three years ago and had never used them in its history.

The United States intelligence community concluded that Syrian forces were behind the chemical attack, using aerial intelligence, local reporting, and samples taken from victims of the attack in its assessment.

In an exclusive interview with AFP news agency, Assad explains that the attack was part of a planned campaign which came as a pretext for the American retaliatory missile strike. Assad asked. "Who committed the attack if there was attack?"

The April 4 attack in the town of Khan Sheikhoun killed scores of people and prompted the U.S. to launch a cruise missile strike on a Syrian air base in response, its first direct assault on the Assad government in the six-year-old conflict.

Turkey and the U.K. Ministry of Defense conducted tests to determine the gas used in the attack was sarin.

"They admitted only to 1,300 tonnes, but we knew in reality they had almost double that", said Sakat, who was one of the most senior figures in the country's chemical program.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week in an attempt to defuse tensions over the Syrian crisis - but the top US diplomat admitted the relationship with Russia remains "at a low point".

The agency said Thursday that Jalal Mansour was detained in northern Lebanon after changing his looks and using a fake identity card for months. "Our impression is that the West, mainly the United States, is hand-in-glove with the terrorists", Assad declared.

After last Tuesday's chemical attack, photographs of either deceased or horribly injured children began to go viral throughout the internet and social media, but Assad denies the legitimacy of these as well. The nation's leader, however, is insisting that the whole event was fabricated in order to "justify" the following airstrike on his country at the hands of Donald Trump's government.

U.S.: Tillerson said Syria's government had committed more than 50 attacks using sarin, chlorine or other chemical weapons.

British scientists have said a toxic gas known as sarin was used in the attack on a rebel-held town, she said.

"To us, it is 100 percent fabrication", he says, speaking of the attack.

The global community has condemned the deaths in Idlib province, which most Western intelligence services believe occurred thanks to a deliberate attack carried out by the Syrian government.

U.S.: Tillerson said Syrian President Bashar Assad should be investigated for war crimes.

Lavrov said he emphasized the need for a wide-ranging OPCW probe during Wednesday's talks in Moscow with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, suggesting that Western nations, Russian Federation and some regional powers could dispatch additional experts to join the investigation.
