Boris Johnson and French foreign minister urge 'no impunity' over Syria attack

In recent days, Assad and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have claimed the attack was staged by the pretext for last week's missile attack.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said the meeting sent a "strong message" to Washington.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also accused the US of trying to incite further violence in the region instead of finding a peaceful solution.

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad said a suspected chemical weapons attack was a "fabrication" to justify a U.S. strike on his forces, in an exclusive interview with AFP in Damascus.

In 2013, Syria was blamed for a chemical attack that hit the rebel-held Damascus suburb of Ghouta, in which activists say 1,400 people died.

They plan to press Trump to explain whether he will conduct future attacks against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime as well as push for Congress to reassert its constitutional authority to declare war, congressional aides and lawmakers on the call told CNN.

The pair said there would be "no impunity" for those responsible for the attack, which they said was "highly likely" to have been carried out by Bashar Assad's regime.

Russia's foreign minister says Moscow expects the United Nations' chemical weapons watchdog to conduct an extensive probe into last week's chemical attack in Syria.

Russia, one of Syria's few worldwide allies, vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution which would require the regime to provide detailed information about air operations and immediate access to air bases.

Trump said in a Fox Business interview this week, "We're not going into Syria".

Denouncing the chemical attack, President Donald Trump ordered a strike that saw 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles destroy the airbase in central Syria.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict, major Western powers have repeatedly insisted on Assad's departure, claiming that he has lost legitimacy by tackling the unrest in Syria with brutal measures.

"We will not allow the peace process to be disrupted", he added.

Furthermore, the US response to the strike was an attempt to send a message to the world that the use of chemical weapons will not be allowed to become an
international norm. "We don't have [a chemical weapons] arsenal and we're not going to use it, and you have many indications if you don't have proof, because no one has concrete evidence".

The war also led to the emergence of the Islamic State jihadist group, which seized control of large parts of Syria and Iraq in 2014 but has since lost much of the territory it once controlled.

Mr Lavrov met his United States counterpart Rex Tillerson in Moscow earlier in the week, but it is clear the talks did little to defuse the escalating tensions between the two countries.

Even if we have them, we wouldn't use them.

"Definitely, 100 percent for us, it's fabrication", he said.

Russian Federation has staunchly backed Assad's government throughout a civil war that has dragged into a seventh year.
