Korea's attempted missile launch failed: JCS

North Korea has attempted to launch a missile near Sinpo, on its east coast, but the missile blew up nearly immediately, a United States military spokesman says.

As tensions with North Korea escalated heading into the weekend, Trump spent Friday and Saturday mornings golfing at his private club in West Palm Beach, Florida, greeting members after he returned from the green, according to someone who saw him.

The launch comes one day after North Korea revealed several new weapons systems, including what appear to be new intercontinental ballistic missile models (ICBM), during a military parade in Pyongyang.

A huge truck carrying the missile-shaped objective rolled through the main square of the capital in front of leader Kim Jong-un and other top officials of the communist regime, showed TV footage.

Pence is in Seoul at the beginning of a 10-day trip to Asia in what his aides said was a sign of US commitment to its ally in the face of rising tension.

UPDATE 1: President Trump was at Mar-a-Lago when informed of the failure.

Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said Mr Trump and his military team "are aware of North Korea's most recent unsuccessful missile launch. The president has no further comment".

The display included submarine-launched ballistic missiles, believed to be the same type of missile North Korea fired from land in February. North Korea launched a series of medium-range Musudan missiles previous year - thought to be created to become a stage in an ICBM - and all but one failed.

This is the second time this month the North has conducted a missile test near the Sinpo region.

It blew up nearly immediately, complicating efforts to identify the missile's size and range.

Observers paid close attention to the missiles and launchers that were displayed during the colorful military spectacle.

In Seoul, South Korea's presidential office convened a national security council meeting to examine its security policy. He was already scheduled to discuss regional security concerns relating to North Korea with South Korean leaders.

Analysts warn that even failed missile launches provide valuable knowledge into North Korea as it tries to build its weapons programme.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests, including two past year.

The isolated nation has conducted at least 50 missile tests since the dynastic young ruler Kim Jong Un took power after his father's death in 2011, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a nonpartisan research group in Washington that maintains a database of the nation's activities. This was the same site used in an earlier missile test from earlier in April, where the projectile had landed underneath the Sea of Japan.

Recently the USA began installing a missile defense system in South Korea that has produced protests from China, which sees North Korea as a useful buffer between it and US ally South Korea.

Over the past three years, a covert war over the missile program has broken out between North Korea and the United States. He is expected in Seoul on Sunday as part of a 10-day trip to Asia to pledge commitment to opposing the North's weapons programs.
