Manchester City player ratings against Southampton: Did Vincent Kompany stand out?

Manchester City capped a dominant display at St. Mary's by thrashing Southampton 3-0 thanks to second half goals from Vincent Kompany, Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero.

"I was really impressed when they came here [in October, in a 1-1 draw] in what was a busy time for us".

"It's always a long journey back", Kompany told BT Sport television. From suffering injuries to selling players and buying reinforcements, just about everything that can happen to a team mid-season has happened to the Saints of Southampton.

"Of course now we play an FA Cup semi-final (against Arsenal) and in 10 days we play a "real" final against United (in the Premier League), so that's why it was important for our confidence to win, so I'm happy about that", said Guardiola.

But after City skipper Kompany found the net for the first time since August 2015, Sane and Aguero ensured they kept Jose Mourinho's side at bay in the race for a top-four finish.

Mousa Dembele and Heung-Min Son both netted within the space of three first-half minutes and Harry Kane, starting for the first time in almost five weeks, later joined Alan Shearer, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Thierry Henry as only the fourth player to score 20 or more goals in three consecutive Premier League seasons.

Manchester City next take on Southampton in the Premier League this weekend.

Pochettino looks to emulate Ferguson at Spurs
Lampard conceded on Sunday morning that the youngster is "a special player" and "better than me when I was 20, that's for sure". Our chairman has also tied down our players for five more years on contracts. "It is not about punishing him".

"We played good", the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager added.

De Bruyne was also the architect for the third, clipping a right-wing cross to the far post for Aguero to secure City's first win in four away matches.

Gabbiadini missed Silva's kick from the left and Kompany, making only his third appearance of 2017, muscled his way past Ryan Bertrand and headed past Forster from six yards before celebrating wildly. We were able finally to make 15, 20, 25 passes in a row. And hopefully he can stay fit until the end of the season. That result was their first win in five league games, providing a welcome relief from the pressures of Manchester United.

Southampton were victorious in their last game against West Brom.

First Silva's through-ball sent De Bruyne through and he squared for Sane to sweep past Forster for his ninth of the season.

Guardiola has said that the Belgian global is still capable of putting in quality performances and will feature for City next season as long as he can stay fit. Southampton have embarked on a late charge towards a place in the Top 4, while Manchester City are fighting hard for a place in the Top 4 after faltering in their title charge.
