The gifted guitarist formed the J. Geils Band with two friends while attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Geils Band, born John Warren Geils Jr., was found dead in his home in Groton, Massachusetts on Tuesday.

Police responded to Geils' residence around 4 p.m. on Tuesday for a well-being check.

Sources told the local outlet that he was pronounced dead at the scene and that there was no foul play suspected.

The band's early albums were not huge sellers but they burnished their reputation with their high-energy performances, eventually releasing three concert LPs during their active days.

On Facebook, Wolf shared a short message about his former bandmate, writing, "Thinking of all the times we kicked it high and rocked down the house!"

The training original also included J. Geils (guitar), Peter Wolf (vocals), Seth Justman (keyboards), Dany Klein (bass), "Magic" Dick (real name Richard Salwitz, harmonica) and Stephen Jo Bladd (drummer). Shortly thereafter The J. Geils Band parted ways with Wolf and broke up in 1985.

This is published unedited from the PTI feed. Their third album, Freeze Frame, was No. 1 for four weeks in 1983, and its hit song, Centerfold, was No. 1 for six weeks on the Billboard Top 100.

The J. Geils Band - fronted by singer Peter Wolf - made their Billboard chart debut on January 30, 1971, when their eponymous album entered the Billboard 200.

But in 1982, its album "Freeze-Frame" was an even bigger smash on the strength of the hit single "Centerfold".

"Must of Got Lost" (from Nightmares...and Other Tales from the Vinyl Jungle, 1974) - This Wolf/Justman song was their biggest hit yet, hitting #12 on the pop charts. Bands such as The Eagles, U2, Billy Joel, and ZZ Top all opened for the band while on tour.

In 2012, the band went out on tour without Geils who filed an unsuccessful lawsuit trying to stop the band from using his name. He returned to his jazz roots with the release of his first solo album in 2005.
