Samsung Seeks to Lure Back Buyers With Sleek S8 Smartphone

And as The Verge's Tom Warren points out, the Galaxy S8's PC mode beats Microsoft's Continuum in several key ways, including in its ability to split-screen two apps. Justin Denison, the vice president of product strategy of Samsung Electronics America, was quoted saying S8 "will fundamentally change the way you use your phone by giving you more screen".

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 has gone out of stock in the official Samsung UK online store.

The larger 6.2-inch S8+ will come with an OLED display with 529 ppi support. The sleek phone's standout features are a screen that goes almost to the edges of the device, and a virtual assistant named Bixby. Instead, Samsung is embedding a virtual home button in the display and moving the fingerprint sensor to the back. The feature is also integrated with the camera so that it can identify objects like buildings, or a particular bottle of wine.

Additionally, both the phones will come with digital assistant Bixby that will help the user in interacting with the device.

The organization needed to break the jinx of Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, and to make sure that the S8 will not turn out to the repetition. OLED display will also boost the phone's battery life.

But there's a major caveat: Bixby will work only with selected Samsung apps, including the photo gallery and messages.

James Yan, a research director at Counterpoint, said the S8 will not give a big boost to the South Korean tech giant's overall China sales.

"I think it does put a lot of pressure on Apple to show that they can still innovate".

As with previous models, the S8 is water and dust resistant and features a memory card slot to supplement 64 gigabytes of built-in storage, which is higher than the base models of most rivals.

Apple's standard iPhone 7 screen is notoriously low resolution for a flagship phone today (it's 750p), despite the Retina branding, but at least the iPhone 7 Plus hits the 1080p mark. The curvature of the side screens that molds into the metal frame on the side of the phone causes an illusion of the device having no bezels. Reportedly, this new feature enables users to connect peripherals like mouse, keyboard and monitor with the smart phone and use the phone like a desktop.

Not a single Microsoft-made flagship Windows phone was released in 2016, and there's a strong possibility 2017 will go the same way. Samsung also unveiled a router that doubles as a hub for internet-connected appliances and lights.

Samsung said its previously announced Gear VR headset upgrade, which will now include a hand-held controller, will go on sale in April for about $130. Besides, the company has bundled high-performance earphones tuned by AKG by Harman, claiming to offer unbeatable sound quality as an in-box accessory.
