Vimy Ridge focus of tributes

The royal family was accompanied by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Francois Hollande. The palace documented the ceremony on their official Instagram page.

Prince William and Prince Harry joined Prince Charles at the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in France on Saturday.

"Canada was born here", Trudeau said in his remarks. We have the opportunity to look back on our history and to learn valuable lessons from the past. They were ordinary - yet extraordinary - men, from all corners of the country: Francophone, Anglophone, new Canadians, Indigenous Peoples.

The battle of Vimy Ridge was the first occasion during the World War I that all four divisions of the Canadian corps fought alongside each other. Almost 3,600 Canadians lost their lives.

From the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles, 47 soldiers were killed and 151 wounded in the assault. The battle of Vimy Ridge was part of the allies efforts to push the Germans out of France.

"Those spires stand for peace and for freedom", Johnston said. We came down as Canadians'.

The ceremony was one of many being held across the country and in Vimy itself this weekend, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, which many Canadian historians characterize as the event that brought Canada together as a nation on the world stage. And we thank every Canadian who has answered the call to serve for their selflessness and sacrifice.
