Pence arrived in South Korea just hours after North Korea launched its latest ballistic missile - which exploded within a few seconds - and amid a weekend of fanfare in North Korea, during which the regime showed off what appeared to be new missiles created to reach the United States.

The American official will head to Japan on Tuesday, the second stop on a four-nation tour.

On Monday, Vice President Mike Pence confirmed that the recent USA bombings of Syria and Afghanistan were nothing but a warning message for North Korea, contradicting earlier statements from the White House.

The United States, its allies and China are working together on a range of responses to North Korea's latest failed ballistic missile test, Trump's national security adviser said on Sunday, citing what he called an global consensus to act.

The US Navy this month struck a Syrian airfield with 59 Tomahawk missiles after a chemical weapons attack. The high-profile failure came as the North tried to showcase its nuclear and missile capabilities around the birth anniversary of the North's late founder and as a US aircraft carrier neared the Korean Peninsula.

The vice president reiterated Monday that "all options are on the table" to deal with the threat posed by North Korea.

Then, less than a week later, the US military dropped a 22,000-pound bomb - the largest non-nuclear bomb ever used in combat by the United States - on Islamic State forces in eastern Afghanistan.

Pence on Monday warned North Korea not to test President Donald Trump's resolve, declaring that "all options are on the table" for curbing its missile and nuclear weapons programmes.

Earlier in the day, the vice president, the son of a Korean War veteran, Edward Pence of the 45th infantry division of the U.S. Army, visited the demilitarized zone (DMZ) bordering North Korea.

'But the era of strategic patience is over, ' he declared.

Pence's visit came amid increasing tensions and heated rhetoric on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un looks at a rocket warhead tip after a simulated test of atmospheric re-entry of a ballistic missile, at an unidentified location in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang on March 15, 2016. So when the medium-range missile test failed right after launch early Sunday morning local time, Trump was informed immediately and chose to downplay it, according to the person.

Russia's foreign minister says he hopes the US will not take unilateral action against North Korea as it did recently in Syria. For visitors like Tillerson, Hagel and Carter, that has prompted surreal sights in which North Korean troops photograph them through windows of the conference building, nearly paparazzi-style.

Her response reflected the phrasing of North Korean propaganda, as well as the reality that every person here has heard talk of war for decades.

He called the North Korean regime "the region's most unsafe and urgent threat" and said that Washington hopes to achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula "through peaceable means", but reiterated that "all options are on the table".

But foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang distanced his government from the decision and said it was purely "market-based".

Pyongyang has conducted several missile and nuclear tests in defiance of U.N. sanctions, and regularly threatens to destroy South Korea and the United States.

"It is heartening to see China commit to these actions".

Addendum: Is China cutting off North Korea's access to tourism? If that test leads to a nuclear test or an ICBM launch, there would be "a powerful punishing measure that North Korean authority can't endure", South Korean officials said.

China banned imports of North Korean coal on February 26, cutting off its most important export and Chinese media has raised the possibility of restricting oil shipments to the North if it unleashed more provocations. While the North did not conduct a nuclear test over the weekend, the specter of a potential escalation hung over he start of his 10-day trip to Asia.

CBS News reports from a White House source that had Pyongyang conducted a nuclear test this weekend as expected, the United States would have taken some of those "other actions".
