More than 1000 register to run for presidency in Iran

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani registered on Friday for next month's election, facing a tougher-than-expected battle thanks to widespread criticism over his handling of the economy.

Rouhani's statement came as an apparently defiant response to USA efforts to hamper the Iranian military ahead of an election in May, where he hopes to secure a second four-year term. The registration of the candidates will remain open until April 15.

The Guardian Council will assess the qualification of the applicants and announce the names of the qualified candidates by April 27. Pursuant to the Iranian law, that process can be extended for 4 days. Based on these requirements, more than 800 people, including former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have registered to run in the election. Rouhani changed his tone when he said that Iran would not seek permission by any power to develop missile and air fighters; "balance of power in the region and securing our deterrence power are two major reasons that Iran should improve its defensive capabilities", he added.

In 2013 presidential elections more than 460 candidates submitted registrations, however the Guardian Council approved the candidacy of only 8 applicants, rejecting the candidacy of Former Iranian president Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Many Iranians have grown impatient with the slow rate of improvement in their economic fortunes since the lifting of sanctions after Iran curbed its disputed nuclear activity under its deal with world powers.

Hamidreza Taraghi, a hard-line political analyst who supports Raeesi, noted that an aide to Ahmadinejad, Hamid Baghaee, had also registered as a candidate Wednesday. Ahmadinejad himself described his decision to run as meant to help Baghaei.

Reformists were also able to win a considerable number of seats during the parliamentary election of 2016 and they seem to be willing to put their weight behind Rouhani again in the upcoming presidential elections.

Since the deal, Iran has signed multi-billion-dollar contracts with airplane manufacturers Boeing Co. and Airbus.

Critics of the deal, however, complain that economic benefits have yet to trickle down to average Iranians.

President Hassan Rouhani is favored to win re-election. Rouhani also is presumed to maintain support among liberals and those wanting tensions eased with the West, though polling is hard. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article. "We'll continue down our path until the end", Rouhani said. The council, which is made up of clerics and Islamic jurists, normally disqualifies dissidents, women, and many reformists.
