Nearly half a million Iraqis have fled Mosul fighting, UN says

The Iraqis are advancing on the most densely populated area of the city with very narrow streets.

- November 13: Iraq says it has recaptured Nimrud, an ancient city southeast of Mosul. "All road traffic has stopped", said an official at Hammam al-Alil, home to some 30,000 displaced people.

But an assault launched the following month on the part of Mosul that lies west of the Tigris river has seen a sharp rise in displacement.

"Mosul has pushed us to our operational limits", she said.

The Iraqi Security Forces require significant air support in their current campaign for Mosul.

About the USA -led coalition's coordination with Iraqi forces in Mosul operations, al-Alusi said: "Poor weather conditions in the region have reduced airstrikes of the global coalition's warplanes on Daesh-linked sites in western Mosul".

Sabah al-Noaman, spokesperson of the army's elite Counter-Terrorism Service, said the announced "preliminary" toll was the result of fierce encounters between the group and Iraqi forces over the past four days at the Tenek and Abar districts, both recaptured recently by the government troops, Iraqi News reported.

Amid reports that operations were slowing down or stalled in the western half of Mosul after mass civilian casualties in March, spokesperson for the operations, Brigadier General Yahya Rasul issued a denial.

As for Daesh's own dead, the morgue worker said he was forced to fabricate the cause of death on the certificates of Iraqi fighters slain in battle, such as "car accident".

"Doctors had to treat gun wounds victims without anaesthetic", he said, adding that patients who survive the operations are immediately discharged from the hospital because there aren't enough beds or medicines to alleviate their pain.

More than 327,000 have fled fighting since the offensive operation started on October 17, with strong air and ground support from a US -led coalition.

April 11: An Iraqi military spokesman says IS now controls less than seven percent of the country, down from 40 percent in 2014.
