North Korea Decides Against Starting World War III, At Least Today

The North has said it has developed and would launch a missile that can strike the mainland United States, but officials and experts believe such a threat is some time away.

North Korea's last parade was held in October 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Worker's Party of Korea.

North Korea's military forces were massed in Pyongyang today for a show of strength by leader Kim Jong-Un after declaring they are ready for war.

A North Korean medium-range missile exploded seconds after it was launched on Sunday, U.S. officials said, a high-profile failure that came hours before the American vice president arrived in South Korea, and as an American aircraft supercarrier approaches the Korean Peninsula in a show of force.

North Korea has invoked similarly dire scenarios on previous occasions when tensions on the Korean peninsula have spiked, but Beijing's warnings have fuelled worldwide concerns that the current situation is reaching tipping point.

But U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Friday that the Trump administration had settled on a policy that will emphasize increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of China, North Korea's only major ally, instead of military options or trying to overthrow Kim's regime.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Saturday showcased its military muscles by parading all of its most-advanced ballistic and tactic missiles, including a submarine-launched ballistic missile which could strike targets 1000 km away.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un (R) waves from a balcony of the Grand People's Study house following a military parade marking the 105th anniversary of the birth of late North Korean leader Kim Il-Sung, in Pyongyang on April 15, 2017.

It comes amid speculation that the current leader, Kim Jong-un, could order another nuclear test.

Coupled with the 59 Tomahawk missiles Trump authorized to be launched at a Syrian air base, the USA appeared to be sending a message to North Korea - and other enemies - that force would be used more frequently than in the past.

Amid the fanfare and regalia of its founder's birthday celebrations, North Korea rolled out what appeared to be new missiles - a brazen display as the country ratchets up its rhetoric against efforts to curb its weapons programs.

Single-engine propeller-powered planes flew in a 105 formation overhead.

North Korea responded by warning of a "merciless retaliatory strike" if the USA acts first.

US Pacific Command said it tracked a missile launch at 5:21 p.m. ET and said the missile blew up nearly immediately.

North Korea staged an extravagant display of military strength at Saturday's parade amid concern that mounting tensions in the region could lead to a conflict with the US.

While North Korea regularly launches short-range missiles, it is also developing mid-range and long-range missiles meant to target United States troops in Asia and, eventually, the USA mainland.

"It's presumed to be a new ICBM". South Korea has a spotty record of tracking developments in North Korea, as information about the secretive, authoritarian state is often impossible to confirm.

Satellite imagery suggests North Korea could conduct another underground nuclear test at any time.
