The North Korea problem is "coming to a head", McMaster says

Former Conservative foreign secretary Sir Malcom Rifkind said it was possible that the missile either malfunctioned or was sabotaged by a USA cyber attack.

McMaster told ABC that Trump had directed U.S. military, diplomatic and intelligence officials to provide him with options-in concertation with regional allies including China-that could be used "if the North Korea regime refuses to denuclearise".

The left-wing Democratic United Party has been critical of the deployment of THAAD and called for more engagement with North Korea to prevent further nuclearization. Recent satellite imagery suggests the country could conduct another underground nuclear test at any time.

North Korea launched a missile today but it blew up nearly immediately after its launch, the U.S. military said.

He has repeatedly said that if China, North Korea's dominant trading partner, isn't willing to do more to squeeze the North, the USA might take the matter into its own hands.

Thousands of soldiers marched during a two-hour parade Saturday celebrating the 105th birthday of North Korea's late founder Kim Il Sung on Saturday.

President Donald Trump was uncharacteristically quiet about the failed launch, which was attempted from the east coast city of Sinpo.

"The message of the people of the United States of America is that we seek peace, but America has always sought peace through strength and my message here today standing with USA forces Korea, standing with courageous soldiers from the Republic of Korea is a message of resolve". North Korea is thought to have a small arsenal of atomic bombs and an impressive array of short- and medium-range missiles.

A North Korean missile exploded during launch on Sunday, U.S. and South Korean officials said.

Pence visited a military base near the Demilitarized Zone, a day after the North conducted a failed missile launch.

He is scheduled to meet in Seoul with South Korea's acting president, Hwang Kyo-ahn, later in the day. If North Korea had undertaken a nuclear test on April 15, that would have been way more provocative and would have likely incited an American military response, he added. North Korea launched a long range rocket and conducted two nuclear tests past year, including its most powerful to date, and there have been a slew of shorter range missile firings.

On a visit to South Korea, he is set to discuss ways to deal with Pyongyang amid speculation that leader Kim Jong-un could order a new nuclear test.

Last month, a ballistic missile was also test fired by North Korea from the same site.

The advisor reiterated China's worrisome of the current situation, saying that President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are working together. Last week, Trump said he would not declare China a currency manipulator, pulling back from a campaign promise, as he looked for help from Beijing, which is the North's dominant trade partner.

Trump has ordered a navy strike group flagshipped by a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to head to the region as a show of force as his officials assess tougher economic sanctions as well as military options against the North.

Still, even without mastering ICBM technology - which will mean North Korea can reach Europe and mainland United States of America from its own territory - just the medium range missiles, and North Korea's apparent success in mounting them on submarines, has begun to spook Washington.

"USPACOM is fully committed to working closely with its allies in the Republic of Korea and in Japan to maintain security", Benham said.

The US has recently leaned on China - North Korea's main ally - to apply pressure to Pyongyang to curtail its nuclear ambitions.
