IPhone 8 May Ditch Touch ID

It has been an open secret for quite some time now that alongside the iPhone 7s and 7S Plus, a "premium" flagship 5.8-inch variant with an OLED display, for the first time in an iPhone, would be launched. The OLED display itself is said to be flat on that design, but the glass is curved around the edges.

Based on the expected discontinuation of the physical home button in favor of a virtual button, the leading phone maker is rumored to be using a sensor that is embedded in the phone's OLED screen. In this regard, it mentioned that Apple will bet on a design in which the housing will wear a chassis of polished steel for the sides of the equipment, while the rear of the housing will be made of hardened glass. An aluminum back version is also in the running.

Shares of Synaptics (SYNA), which makes touch-sensor technology, are up 45 cents, or 0.9%, at $50.46. The integration of the Touch ID underneath the iPhone 8 display remains the "biggest bottleneck" in the preparation of mass production for the smartphone. Moving it to the back of the phone is an option, but the sources didn't have anything to say on that.

Bloomberg's sources also revealed Apple's plans could still change before the phones arrive, so there's no guarantee what we've heard, if it's accurate, will be the final design.

The latest drawings were shared on twitter by KK Sneak Leaks, who found the designs lurking on the Chinese website Wiebo. Those, too, match what Bloomberg's sources are describing, and are almost identical to the images from Geskin.

The flash placement, however, seems odd.

Last week, reports said that the Google wants to invest in the LG Display with nearly $1 Billion for the OLED display they want to use to their Pixel 2 series.

The Bloomberg report said Apple is testing more advanced cameras for the iPhone 8. I will say that these particular renders look better than some of the other leaks we've seen in the past.

All the new iPhones will run iOS 11, a mobile operating system that will include a refreshed user-interface and will be announced in June at the company's annual conference for developers, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The leak suggests that all these components will be housed under the glass display, but it does not give any information on how this may actually work.

Soon after the arrival of Samsung Galaxy S8, the Bezels around the iPhone 8 are expected to be thin.

"Since fingerprint login is such a widely used feature and 3D sensing is unproven for this goal, a wholesale elimination of fingerprint sensing in the OLED iPhone would create incremental risk to consumer adoption, in our view". Two other new models will use the same screen technology and sizes as the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
