Stockholm attack: Suspect admits to committing a 'terrorist crime' in Swedish court

An executive at Spotify was among those killed in Friday's attack in Sweden, according to a post from the company's CEO Daniel Ek.

"His position is that he admits to a terrorist crime and accepts therefore that he will be detained", lawyer Johan Eriksson said.

A British citizen and an 11-year-old girl were among those killed when a lorry mowed down pedestrians in a busy shopping district in the Swedish capital.

It was only three-quarters of a mile from Drottninggatan, the pedestrianized street where Akilov steered a stolen beer truck into a crowd shortly before 3 p.m. Friday, killing four people and injuring 15 others.

Akilov was arrested just hours after the attack.

Media reports said the suspect had confessed, claiming he had been ordered by the Islamic State group to carry out the attack against "infidels".

Akilov is a national of central Asian country Uzbekistan, who reportedly had his application for Swedish residency rejected past year.

Swedish police said Mr Akilov was known to security services.

Swedes observed a minute of silence across the country on Monday for the victims of last week's truck attack by a Uzbek man whom police believe was a jihadist sympathiser.

The suspected attacker was an asylum seeker who had his application rejected, Stockholm police said. "The two leaders agreed to maintain and strengthen the already close partnership between the United States and Sweden in the global fight against terrorism".

Police have previously said they are sure the suspect is the driver of the truck, citing technical evidence and video camera surveillance images.

The range of mixed emotions - fear and fraternity, anger and openness, - also surfaced at memorial services and rallies held in Stockholm on Sunday to honor the attack victims. Sweden's SAPO security police said it was working to find "any abettor or network involved in the attack".

Another 10 people are in hospital, four of them in a serious condition. "I think it's very important to stay strong together against anything that wants to change our society, which is based on democracy", said one Swede who gave her name as Marianne.
