Turkey opposition wants referendum result annulled

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Turkey's main opposition party urged the country's electoral board Monday to cancel the results of a landmark referendum that granted sweeping new powers to the nation's president, citing what it called substantial voting irregularities.

He said that Turkey did not "see, hear or acknowledge" the observer mission's reports and accused some European countries of showing more opposition to the constitutional changes than Turkey's own opposition parties. However, three amendments will automatically come into effect following the publication of official election results in 10 to 11 days, according to Mehmet Elitas, the deputy chairman of the governing party, AKP.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today told worldwide monitors to "know your place" after they suggested the landmark referendum giving him extra powers fell short of global standards.

Speaking after his victory was declared, Erdogan said, "The crusaders ideology in the West and their servants attacks us".

The chairman of the State Duma's worldwide affairs committee, Leonid Slutsky, believes that the outcome of the Turkish referendum, in which the supporters of the presidential type of government gained the upper hand with a slight majority, will cause no harm to relations of partnership with Russian Federation.

"God willing, these results will be the beginning of a new era in our country", Erdogan said at a news conference on Sunday.

In a joint statement with German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, Merkel said: "There need to be talks about these issues as soon as possible with Turkey on a bilateral basis, as well as between Turkey and European institutions". The opposition has promised to contest at least a third of the votes cast.

Erdogan won a narrow victory, with 51.41 percent in favour and 48.59 per cent against.

It is of the utmost importance, said Jagland, "to secure the independence of the judiciary in line with the principle of rule of law enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights".

President Donald Trump has become the first Western leader to congratulate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for winning a controversial referendum that grants him far-reaching, largely unchecked powers.

"On referendum day there were no major problems, except in some regions, however we can only regret the absence of civil society observers in polling stations", said Cezar Florin Preda, Head of the delegation from PACE.

Meanwhile, Turkey's foreign ministry has rejected global monitors' findings on its referendum, saying it was "saddened" by what it called "politically-motivated and accusatory" statements.

In a bid to get back to business, Erdogan was on Monday to chair a cabinet and security meeting at his presidential palace that could extend the nine-month state of emergency brought in after the July 15 failed coup, Turkish media said.
