50 years later: South Bend runner finishes Boston Marathon, honors first woman

On April 17, Marine Jose Luis Sanchez stunned audiences as he crossed the finish line of the Boston Marathon 2017.

Kirui finished in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 37 seconds to claim a silver trophy, a guilded olive wreath from Marathon, Greece, and the $150,000 first prize.

Kirui repeatedly tested Rupp in the closing miles, with the American Olympic bronze medalist eventually unable to match the Kenyan's pace.

Rose Chelimo of Bahrain finished 59 seconds behind the Kenyan, while U.S. runners Jordan Hasay and Desiree Linden rounded out the top four.

"They picked me up and my leg slid off", Sanchez told Runner's World. If this doesn't make you love your country, I don't know what does.

He'll create the memorial markers on Boylston Street where bombs killed three spectators and wounded more than 260 others. This year's time in Boston was 5:46:13.

The sole woman on the course that day, Katherine Switzer, was the first woman to break the gender barrier at the Boston Marathon. Though he did not initially acknowledge the gift, Sanchez eventually decided that it was the flag he would fly in the Boston Marathon. "I wrote 2-6-1 on my arm and the crowds cheered me on that day", said Carlson.

The winners' times on the point-to-point Boston course are considered a world best and not a world record because of the possibility of a supportive tailwind like the one on Monday.

Captain Kenneth Fackina, who posted the photograph along with a message, said he was inspired after reading about Sanchez in a Runner's World article.

"The wind is so important", Hug said. "And I saw that he had not come with me, so I pushed a little bit more".
