Kathrine Switzer, who was the first official female entrant in the Boston Marathon 50 years ago, acknowledges the crowd as she is introduced before firing the gun to start the women's elite division at the start of the 2017 Boston Marathon in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Monday, April 17, 2017.

Gloversville's Ethan Miller was 20,463rd overall with a time of 4:26.05.

Several area runners were among those competing in the 121st annual Boston Marathon on Monday.

Writing on Facebook after the race, Ms Switzer said: "I finished, like I did 50 years ago". "I wasn't trying to break any barriers", Switzer, now 70, told SELF past year. The woman, who was holding an American flag, and Granville immediately embrace after he sets her down.

Switzer told WBZ-TV that 125 people ran with her to raise money for the foundation.

American Jordan Hasay, making her first run at the 42 kilometer distance, was third and Desi Linden was fourth - the first time since 1991 that two USA women have finished in the top four.

It's been 50 years since the first woman completed the 26.2 mile journey from Hopkinton to Boylton St.

In the clip, Granville - of Carbondale, Pennsylvania - is seen hoisting his race partner on his back and carrying her to the end of the race. The Boston Athletic Association officially retired bib No. 261 in her honor. She ran with 125 other runners representing her women's-empowerment running club and non-profit, 261 Fearless.

That wasn't correct, of course; women had been running long distances for years, but were generally not given slots in big city marathons. "That's saying that this number really means something".
