Japan's Abe calls for 'peaceable' resolution on North Korea

"The Trump administration has not presented to the Congress a coherent policy in regards to North Korea", Cardin said on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront".

He is expected to discuss Korean tensions with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as well as hold economic talks with Finance Minister Taro Aso. Economic Dialogue at the prime minister's office in Tokyo, Tuesday, April 1.

Pence arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday from South Korea and reassured Japan of US commitment to reining in North Korea's nuclear and missile ambitions in a series of meetings with Japanese leaders, including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Pence arrived in Tokyo from South Korea, where he assured leaders of the "iron-clad" alliance with the US.

"The Prime Minister Abe and Deputy Prime Minister Aso share our goal of a mutually beneficial economic relationship and we look forward to working with them through the U.S. Japan Economic Dialogue to achieve our vision of equal partnership", Pence said. "You read Clinton's book, he said, "Oh, we made such a great peace deal, ' and it was a joke".

"We will not rest and will not relent until we obtain the objective of a denuclearized Korean Peninsula", he said.

China recognizes that North Korea is a problem, but it is pursuing a distinctly different path to a resolution than the U.S. Beijing has been encouraging both countries to engage in dialogue and is critical of Washington's willingness to apply military pressure, but neither Pyongyang nor the U.S. have expressed an interest in talks. But then he ordered the unilateral missile strike against Syria, even after dismissing talk of deeper US involvement in that nation's civil war. His language was stronger than in a written statement he issued shortly after the launch, in which he simply said he was aware of the failure.

One called for "dual-track" talks on denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula - the top priority of the United States - and replacing the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War with a formal peace treaty, a key demand of Pyongyang. "That's just something he believes has not served us well in the past", Spicer said.

Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss an intelligence matter, said the missile was a Scud variant that the US calls a KN-17. Is China going to cooperate with the United States of America to contain North Korea?

Pence reiterated that after years of North Korea testing the US and its neighbors in East Asia with its nuclear ambitions, the USA "era of strategic patience is over".

"I can't say that Obama's presidency was "an era of strategic patience" because the United States took quite tough steps against North Korea in order to hamper the development of industries important for missile and nuclear programs". Defying global pressure, the North on Sunday test-fired another missile and fears are growing it may also be preparing a sixth nuclear test.

Since taking office in January, the new USA administration has called for a turnaround in the USA trade policies to be in line with Trump's policy of "America first".

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric separately expressed concern over rising tensions on the Korean peninsula and said the latest missile test was "troubling".

After talks with Japan's deputy prime minister, Taro Aso, Pence said the US would work with Japan, China and other nations to get Pyongyang to give up its atomic weapons program.
