May calls for June 8 election before Brexit talks

"If you want to avoid a disastrous hard Brexit".

Although among British people, May has a high rating as prime minister, she only has a small majority in the House of Commons. It had been expected that negotiations would begin at the start of June.

Mrs May indicated that Conservative candidates will be expected to sign up to her election manifesto in full, putting pressure on remaining Europhiles within her party to toe the line. This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but after deep thought and reflection and in the strong belief that Britain needs an election now to secure the strong and stable leadership that is required to see our country through Brexit and beyond.

"The country is coming together, but Westminster is not", May said in a sudden appearance outside the prime minister's residence at 10 Downing St., adding that she had "only recently and reluctantly come to this conclusion".

May called U.S. President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other European leaders after the announcement, a spokesman said, without giving details of the conversations.

May triggered a two-year countdown to Britain's exit from the European Union last month, and high-stakes negotiations to settle divorce terms and agree on a new relationship are expected to start within weeks.

May is capitalizing on her runaway lead in the opinion polls and she could win around 100 additional seats in parliament.

Mrs May says an election will root out opposition to Brexit in Parliament and strengthen her hand in negotiations with the EU.

Mr Ray, who gained 2,700 votes in 2015 to finish third in 2015 behind Conservative victor Michael Fabricant with 28,389 and Labour Chris Worsey with 10,200, said there was a now a chance for local people to make their voices heard on key issues such as Brexit and the future of the economy. A poll by YouGov suggests that, in a head-to-head match-up with Corbyn, 49 per cent of Britons prefer her, while just 16 per cent prefer Corbyn. Corbyn wins only 14 percent.

If we do not hold a general election now, their political game-playing will continue, and the negotiations with the European Union will reach their most hard stage in the run-up to the next scheduled election. The election will be a vote on her performance so far. "She's taking people for granted already and voters never like that".

Concerns about North Korea and the French presidential elections also pressured the dollar against the yen, which is traditionally viewed as a haven for capital in times of political and economic stress.Against the yen, the dollar was down 0.35 percent at 108.51 yen.

Her spokesman said she had the backing of her top team of ministers and had informed Queen Elizabeth of her plans on Monday.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron accused Mrs May of "bottling" it, and said broadcasters had a "moral duty" to take part in televised leaders' showdowns.

Prime Minister Theresa May has accused her opponents of "political game-playing" and undermining the country in the upcoming talks to exit the European Union.

There is also a chance that the elections could see the resurgence of the Liberal Democrats.

But, of course, there is more than one side in any negotiation, and in Europe, presidential elections in France will be over by the time the British vote proceeds.

Although elections are held every five years in the United Kingdom, the prime minister can call a snap election provided two-thirds of lawmakers vote for it in the House of Commons.

Polls give May's Conservatives a double-digit lead over Labour, which could have its worst election showing in decades. 'Theresa May would have been insane to agree to a debate, ' he said.
