United Airlines has been at the forefront of airline drama this week due to an incident in which an overbooked flight from Chicago to Louisville, Kentucky, resulted in the violent removal of a passenger.

United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said Wednesday that the passengers can take the compensation in cash, travel credits or miles.

In the case of the Chicago to Louisville flight from which David Dao was forcibly ejected (the airline had to "re-accomodate" customers in the words of United CEO Oscar Munoz) the entire flight had boarded when the four-person crew heading to Louisville showed up at the gate needing seats.

Passengers on Sunday's now infamous United Airlines flight said they were told by the airline that a computer randomly selected the passenger who was forcibly re-accomodated by airport police.

Three officers involved in the incident have been placed on leave.

Kelly said United incident would likely end up in court and lead to more protections for consumers.

Dao filed the emergency "bill of discovery" against the Chicago-based carrier in Illinois State Court demanding that evidence documenting Sunday's "re-accommodation" aboard a Kentucky-bound plane be "preserved and protected", CNBC reported. Video shot by passengers showing the man's bloodied face went viral on social media, prompting a storm of protest. David Dao's attorney, Thomas Demetrio, would not provide a timeline for filing the lawsuit other than to say he had two years to do so, and "I promise you it won't be that long".

Officers could have asked themselves whether the airline had an option to reconsider its actions, said Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, a group that has called for greater restraint from police officers.

Passenger Jayse Anspach told CNN that Dao and his wife initially agreed to take a later flight, but recanted upon learning that that flight wouldn't take off till Monday morning.

"No one should ever be mistreated this way", said Munoz, who also pledged to conduct a wide-ranging review of company policies.

Kelly says sometimes airlines do have legitimate reasons to remove passengers from a flight. "But to just randomly say, 'You're getting off the plane, ' that was awful". When Dao refused to leave his seat, one of the officers could be seen grabbing the screaming man from his window seat and dragging him down the aisle by his arms.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to analyze "the problem of overbooking passengers throughout the industry".

The City of Chicago runs O'Hare International Airport.
