Thousands of migrants rescued from Mediterranean in three days

An estimated 27,000 people have have tried to reach Italy from Libya according to the International Organization of Migration

After about 6,000 migrants were rescued from the Mediterranean in dozens of operations coordinated by the Italian Coast Guard on Friday and Saturday, hundreds more migrants were plucked to safety Sunday from dinghies and fishing boats.

The Malta-based Migrant Offshore Aid Station has rescued between 1,500 and 1,800 in the Central Mediterranean in a major overnight operation.

Between Thursday and Friday, 73 migrants were rescued from five boats by Spanish ships.

Pauline Smith spokeswoman for German sea rescue organisation Jugend Rettet said last night a further 1,000 people remained to be rescued from inflatable dinghies and other craft, with the rescue ships reaching capacity.

According to the International Organization for Migration, almost 32,000 migrants have arrived in Europe by sea so far this year.

The medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said in a tweet that one teenager was found dead in a rubber boat whose passengers were rescued by its ship Aquarius.

Ms Smith said: 'We have never had to deal with so many people at the same time'.

The private search and rescue company said in a statement that the people were rescued from nine vessels, including seven rubber boats and two wooden ones.

The first boat, carrying 41 men and 11 women of sub-Saharan origin, was located by rescue teams shortly after midnight in the Alboran Sea east of the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Libyan coast guard rescued a further 23 migrants of various African nationalities off the coast of Tripoli, he added. Probably the same. How many would have died? The weekend is set to be the latest marker in the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

At the port, a group of teenage Nigerian boys who had arrived as unaccompanied minors by way of sea rescues earlier this year waited at the shore to see if their missing family members were among the arrivals. "We agree. Where are Frontex boats in a day like this?" "We are just lucky we got out of Libya alive".
