US VP Pence says to North Korea: 'The sword stands ready'

"We want to see North Korea abandon its reckless path of the development of nuclear weapons, and also its continual use and testing of ballistic missiles is unacceptable".

Earlier Tuesday, Vice President Mike Pence said during a visit to Japan that what the USA and other countries are concerned about are the "reckless and irresponsible actions of the regime in Pyongyang".

"We appreciate the challenging time in which the people of Japan live with increasing provocation across the Sea of Japan", Pence said in Tokyo before a lunch with Abe. "He holds his cards close to the vest, and I think you're not going to see him telegraphing how he's going to respond to any military or other situation going forward", Spicer said.

USA vice-president Mike Pence has again hinted at the use of military force to deal with North Korea's accelerating nuclear weapons programme, warning that: "all options are on the table".

Chuck Grassley said Tuesday he would give President Donald Trump some "leeway" on declaring China a currency manipulator if it helps in dealings with North Korea.

Grassley said that even though Trump had pulled the US out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, he thought the president has "backed off" somewhat from his campaign promises on trade.

Without looking, can you say the name of the supreme leader of North Korea?

Pence struck a stern tone after arriving at a US naval base in Japan from South Korea. His language was stronger than in an initial written statement he issued shortly after the launch, in which he simply said he was aware of the failure.

Unfortunately for Trump, the "gentleman" Clinton was talking to during his presidency was in fact Kim Jong-il-the now-deceased father of Kim Jong-un.

Korea trade after its trucks haul missiles
China recognizes that North Korea is a problem, but it is pursuing a distinctly different path to a resolution than the U.S. Since then, China has been most vocal in calling for their resumption.

The option, which defense secretary James Mattis has briefed to Congress, has yet to mature into a decision by the military to intercept a tested missile.

Mattis did not identify the type of missile but said it was not of intercontinental range, meaning it could not reach US territory. He did not comment on what might have caused the missile to fail.

"We will not rest and will not relent until we obtain the objective of a denuclearized Korean Peninsula", he said. "Look, China came to the United States, the President, who I really developed a very good relationship with".

But experts and former officials said shooting down a North Korean missile during a test risks an escalation that Washington may not be able to control, one that risks war on the Korean peninsula and potentially devastating consequences to allies South Korea and Japan.

North Korea's extended range Scuds have a roughly 1,000 km range while the Nodong can hit targets as far away as 1,200 km.

The US military is considering shooting down North Korean missile tests as a show of strength to Pyongyang, two sources briefed on the planning told the Guardian. He has since praised China for trying to increase pressure on Pyongyang.

"The world is a hair's breadth from nuclear war", said Kiselyov.

China made a plea for a return to negotiations. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said tensions need to be eased on the Korean Peninsula to bring the escalating dispute to a peaceful resolution.

China defended its trade practices on Tuesday after Chinese-made vehicles were seen towing ballistic missiles during a North Korea military parade despite global sanctions against selling military hardware to Pyongyang.
