Wenger's challenge to his team

"It was not ideal but I think it's good to come back with the win".

" The first time in 20 years, that shows you that even in my age you can change. Now we have a little break with the FA Cup (they play Manchester City on Sunday in the semi-final) and then we come back again to the league".

'Koscielny was the central one, pulling the strings with us both and telling us where to go and that, so with someone like him and his experience it makes it a lot more comfortable'.

"I felt that we were recently a bit vulnerable defensively and to give a bit more reassurance to the team", Wenger told Arsenal TV.

The Gunners had dropped to seventh in the Premier League table before kick-off, so they could ill-afford to return from the Riverside Stadium with anything less than three points. "It was only right we could get them three points and I would like to thank them".

"We have to win every game to have a chance to get in the top four".

Clayton said: "It is hard to come out of games like that". It's good for the confidence.

Back in the 2007-08, the Togo frontman, who now plays for Turkish Super Lig side Istanbul Basaksehir, set the North Londoners' record for away goals scored in the top flight when he netted 14 as Wenger's team finished third.

But after refusing to talk about his own future at the club, Wenger dismissed speculation about his two attackers.

"We are bitterly disappointed with the result, but the players gave everything they had".

For Boro boss Steve Agnew, there was the pain of another defeat but pride in the way his relegation-threatened players performed. "But sometimes when a team lacks confidence, just to add something new to believe helps to focus and overall the fact that we conceded three at West Brom, three at Crystal Palace, I felt it was needed".

"We all realise the task ahead now, we are six points off safety but we have a game in hand and a terrific goal difference".

"The players were fantastic, I couldn't ask any more of them", he said.
