Australia scraps 457 temporary work visa to 'put Australians first'

He said citizenship would only be granted to those who supported Australian values, respected the country's laws and "want to work hard by integrating and contributing to an even better Australia".

This restriction on foreign workers is in response to the Australian government's promise to roll back work visas granted to fast-food restaurants.

Dutton said there were 95,757 workers in Australia on primary 457 visas and 76,430 secondary visa holders as at September 30 previous year.

The federal government will abolish the 457 visa program that allows skilled foreigners to work in Australia.

"Our government has stopped boats, got kids out of detention, cancelled visas of criminals, closed down Labour's dodgy 457 programme and now we are modernising the pathway to citizenship", he said.

Today, the country's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced changes to the citizenship test, which almost 4,000 Irish people passed a year ago alone.

Turnbull used Facebook to announce the policy, which he said would "put jobs first" and "Australians first", signalling a reduction in the occupations available to skilled foreign workers and raising the threshold to qualify.

Mr Turnbull, echoing the policy of US President Donald Trump, hailed the policy as "putting Australians first".

The new measures will also up residency requirements from one year to four.

The citizenship crackdown comes follows the decision to overhaul the 457 temporary foreign worker visa system.

Turnbull said this test was not not enough to assess whether an applicant has understanding of and commitment to "Australian values" and responsibilities.

"Australian workers must have priority for Australian jobs, so we are abolishing the 457 visa, the visa that brings temporary foreign workers into our country".

"The opposition party has also spoken about the proposed changes and said that it's created to appease [the government's] conservative base and perhaps nationalist groups".

"One suspects that Malcolm Turnbull is having much greater focus on (predecessor) Tony Abbott or perhaps One Nation, than on any real and substantive change here", Labor Senator Penny Wong told ABC radio.

Island neighbours, New Zealand, announced that it would be following Australia's suit by drastically tightening access to its skilled work visas.
