Bill O'Reilly denies harassment allegations after losing job at Fox News

He still went ahead and signed a new contract with Fox, however.

"In many ways, he led Fox's cable news revolution", said Frank Sesno, a journalism professor at George Washington University and former CNN Washington bureau chief.

But it was O'Reilly who created the template for how to succeed in cable TV punditry, delighting his viewers with unapologetic attacks on liberal politicians and media members that he delivered with gusto.

The New York Times reports that an African-American woman - who remains anonymous - came forward this week with allegations of her own, saying O'Reilly would at various times grunt like a "wild boar" at her desk, leer at her and refer to her as "hot chocolate". Fox's longtime CEO Roger Ailes resigned abruptly amid similar sexual harassment charges last July.

The network also lost Greta Van Susteren in 2016 and Megyn Kelly in January of this year.

"O'Reilly's fate at the network is expected to be discussed on Thursday at a board meeting for Fox News's parent company, 21st Century Fox".

That certainly could happen, though it probably won't be easy.

The veteran presenter, 67, said at the time that he had settled only to spare his children from the controversy.

O'Reilly had spearheaded the networks' primetime lineup for over two decades.

In addition to hosting "The Factor", O'Reilly has also written a series of historical narratives, including "Killing Jesus" and "Killing Lincoln", that have each sold more than 1 million copies in hardcover. Shares of Twenty-First Century Fox were down less than 1 percent at $30.50 in Wednesday afternoon trading.

Tucker Carlson will fill O'Reilly's 8 p.m.

Mr O'Reilly has been off the air since last Wednesday, part of what was billed as a planned vacation around the Easter holiday. He thanked his viewers and noted the success Fox had achieved. "When we look at data, at what programs people report watching, you just don't find people who watch Bill O'Reilly and nothing else on Fox", Cassino said. Advertisers may have been reluctant to return if there were continuing harassment complaints.

O'Reilly's departure will not have any effect on Twenty-First Century Fox's overall profitability, said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research.

As the news rolled into Twitter, users reacted accordingly.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Fox News is planning to "cut ties" with The O'Reilly Factor host after he was hit with SEVERAL allegations of sexual harassment.

In a Wednesday memo to employees signed by all three Murdochs and provided to The Associated Press, Fox again emphasized its commitment to a workplace culture of "trust and respect".

For Fox executives, it wasn't clear when it would end: a campaign to target advertisers was continuing, a group of women demonstrated in front of Fox's headquarters Tuesday and another woman, a former clerical worker at Fox, called a harassment hotline and accusing the host of boorish behavior.

Don't expect O'Reilly to slip quietly away, said Annenberg's Hollihan. You failed him, you failed Bill O'Reilly.
