Britain's May wins parliament's backing for June 8 snap election

The region's MPs unanimously backed the Prime Minister in her successful bid to force an early general election.

Peers would also be forced to back the priorities under the Salisbury Convention, which means that the Lords will not try and vote down government plans mentioned in an election manifesto. It is certainly true that the unexpected calling of a snap election could give rise to further uncertainty, especially in the event of a non-Conservative win, but perhaps it is preferable to have political uncertainty in advance of final Brexit negotiations rather than simultaneously.

Some opinion polls have the Conservative Party a whopping 20 percentage points ahead of the main opposition Labour Party.

Owen Paterson, who represents North Shropshire, said he had supported the vote because a general election victory would strengthen Theresa May's hand in the forthcoming Brexit negotiations.

In the last equivalent snap poll, in 1974, then Conservative Prime Minister Edward Heath called an election on the question of "Who governs Britain?" while he was battling striking coal miners.

"In a lot of seats, there are a lot of "Remain" voters to appeal to", Ford said, particularly as the main opposition Labour party's official position on leaving the European Union is "deeply unclear".

The latest in a line of polls taken after the snap general election announcement shows that the ruling Conservative party looks unbeatable right now.

So far, Labour's stance has been to allow the government to go ahead with the European Union divorce, but only under certain conditions, such as retaining strong economic ties with the bloc.

She continues to oppose Brexit.

'It's important to make sure we get the strongest possible mandate to deliver the best deal with our European friends.

Like nearly everyone else in Britain, the election announcement caught financial markets off guard, amid concerns of the economic implications of Brexit.

Technically, there are now only two ways to call early elections.

Britain's next election had been scheduled for May 2020, but a two-thirds majority vote in parliament could overrule that in Wednesday's vote, which British media reported could come at around 1300 GMT after an hour and a half of debate. "Now we will be much freer", she told The Sun.

Meanwhile the BBC's head of newsgathering Jonathan Munro told The Telegraph that he did "not want to get in a position where any party leader stops us doing a programme that we think is in the public interest".

But for Scotland's first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, the move was a "huge political miscalculation" that could help the Scottish National Party's efforts to hold an independence vote.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch UK economist Robert Wood and his team, said a large Tory majority government as being hugely beneficial to Britain's Brexit negotiations in a note to clients.

The fear of future economic damage has been reflected mainly in the pound's weakness since the initial shock of the Brexit result last June, which saw the currency tank from the $1.50 mark to 32-year lows around $1.20.

The Prime Minister has been accused of trying to "run away" from scrutiny as broadcasters appeared set to hold election TV debates despite her refusal to take part.

An early election would, therefore, be the fourth big vote in four years after the general election of 2015.
