British Parliament backs PM's call for June general election over 'Brexit'

Leaders of European Union states are due to adopt negotiating guidelines at an April 29 summit, and the bloc will prepare detailed plans for the talks with Britain by late May.

Labour are now lagging well behind Theresa May's Conservatives as campaigning ahead of the snap June 8 vote gets underway. His party was nearly wiped out in the 2015 general election after colluding with the Tories for five years in a coalition government. A two-thirds majority of MPs must agree to a move that will shorten the lifespan of a parliament.

"In recent weeks Labour have threatened to vote against the final agreement we reach with the EU, the Liberal Democrats have said they want to grind the business of government to a standstill, the SNP say they will vote against the legislation that formally repeals Britain's membership of the EU", May explained.

In a sign of the key campaign issues ahead, May traded barbs in the Commons with opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, whose party is deeply divided and languishing up to 20 points behind the Conservatives.

May has already won approval from Queen Elizabeth for the snap election.

He dismissed the PM's argument that she needs a fresh mandate to deliver Brexit, and said it was "extremely interesting" she had called for an election as the Crown Prosecution Service decides whether to press charges against a number of Tory MPs over allegations relating to 2015 election expenses.

Brexit will dominate the campaign, with May - who took office after David Cameron resigned following the European Union vote - seeking public backing for her plan to pull Britain out of Europe's single market.

She also revealed a concern that the May 2020 election date stipulated by the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act would leave her vulnerable to pressure from Brussels as she neared the end of the two-year withdrawal negotiations in March 2019. The choice before us is clear: "to trust the people and then let the public decide".

Communist Party leader Robert Griffiths said that the unelected Prime Minister, who was appointed to her position by the Conservative Party following David Cameron's post-Brexit vote resignation, had called the election because she was standing on shaky ground and had "no mandate for five more years of austerity, privatization, and war".

She insists an early election would provide "certainty and stability" in the negotiations, which will now start after the vote. That was 1983 during the Margaret Thatcher era, and it's déjà vu for the Labour Party more than three decades later under another Conservative premier, Theresa May.

May's Conservatives now hold 330 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.

Mr Corbyn said Mrs May's U-turn on her previous insistence that she would not call an election showed she could not be trusted.

All sides are now gearing up for the fourth major election in four years, after last June's shock referendum vote for Brexit, the 2015 general election, and the 2014 Scottish independence vote.

"This election is going to be fought on the streets of this country".

"There should be unity here in Westminster, but instead there is division", May said Tuesday, according to CNN.

"Our opponents believe that because the government's majority is so small, our resolve will weaken and that they can force us to change course".

There has been widespread public support for Monday's decision, while political experts have given mixed responses.
