Gorsuch Joins the Supreme Court With Nod to Scalia

Judge Neil Gorsuch is sworn in as U.S. President Trump watches with Louise Gorsuch in the Rose Garden of the White House

The first ceremony took place at about 9 a.m.in the justices' conference room, with Gorsuch's family members present and Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. administering the oath required by the Constitution.

Trump also expressed confidence that Gorsuch would decide cases based on a "fair and objective reading of the law" not on his personal preferences.

His credentials include degrees from Columbia, Harvard Law and Oxford and clerkships with two Supreme Court justices, the late Byron White and Kennedy, who will be administering the oath to his protege in the White House Rose Garden.

Gorsuch filled a vacancy that had lingered for almost 14 months after conservative Justice Antonin Scalia's February 2016 death.

The Senate confirmed Gorsuch as an associate justice in a 54-45 vote on Friday, after deploying the so-called "nuclear option" to override Democratic opposition and bypass the rule that requires a minimum of 60 votes to end Senate discussion. They include a religious rights case on April 19 in which a Missouri church is objecting to being denied state funds for a playground project due to a state ban on providing public money to religious organizations.

President Donald Trump stated what political observers already knew, that he prevailed in the uphill battle to get Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch confirmed, and was able to accomplish the task "in the first 100 days".

Gorsuch now becomes part of Trump's legacy as president.

The 49-year-old appeals court judge from Colorado was sworn in during the ceremony by Justice Anthony Kennedy, for whom he once served as a law clerk.

"I can not tell you how honored I am to have here today my mentor, Justice Kennedy, administer the judicial oath, a lovely oath, as he did for me 11 years ago when I became a Circuit judge", Gorsuch said, adding that he was "humbled" by the role.

"As a deep believer in the rule of law, Judge Gorsuch will serve the American people with distinction as he continues to faithfully and vigorously defend our Constitution", he said after his confirmation. -Gorsuch joins the ranks of justices who are millionaires.

Referring to Gorsuch's predecessor, who was beloved by conservatives, Slattery said the new justice "will no doubt live up to the standard set by Justice Antonin Scalia".

Gorsuch, watched by his daughters Emma and Bindi, promised to be a "faithful servant of the constitution and laws of this great nation". His unprecedented blockade of Merrick Garland, Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee, made that clear, they believed. The Liberty Counsel statement also quoted from Gorsuch's book on assisted suicide and euthanasia, which anti-abortion activists have taken as a signal that Gorsuch will help them overturn Roe v. Wade: "Human life is fundamentally and inherently valuable, and that the intentional taking of human life by private persons is always wrong". The Republican majority in Congress made it hard for former US President Barack Obama to appoint a replacement for Scalia in hopes that a Republican president would be elected to appoint a conservative judge - as indeed happened.

Gorsuch can't vote on cases argued before he was sworn-in.
