Trudeau was at the site in France surrounded by dignitaries like French President Francoise Hollande and and Britain's Prince Charles.

Millions more are expected to watch and listen by radio and TV, or attend local commemorative ceremonies.

Hollande said the links built between France and Canada were evident today "when we condemn chemical massacres committed by a criminal regime" - a clear reference to the suspected chemical attack in rebel-held Syria this week. "And he, in turn, passed it on to me". The troops prepared carefully, learning from the mistakes made by British and French troops that had tried and failed to reclaim the ridge. The Battle of Vimy Ridge remains one of the bloodiest battles in Canada's history.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Canadians who died at Vimy Ridge 100 years ago today helped shape Canada into a nation committed to peace.

"There's a sense of accomplishment of what we did".

While many Canadians consider the victory at Vimy a significant step in their nation's development, some historians have debunked the state's official view of its significance.

More than 20,000 Canadians have travelled to Europe to mark the centenary of one of the country's defining moments - the Battle of Vimy Ridge during World War One.

"It did not call for the same degree of resource and initiative that were displayed in any of the three great battles of the last hundred days: Amiens, Arras, Cambrai". We pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of a pivotal battle that has left an indelible mark on our history. That would come four months later, at Hill 70, when the Canadians fought under Currie.

After the service came to a close, the parade marched to the Cloverdale Legion, where the cadets were served a lunch and community members were able to view a display of First World War items, which included barbed wire and a German helmet retrieved from the battle. The illumination was projected on the National War Memorial and adjacent screens. Vimy was the next best location because of its accessibility. In the words of one veteran: 'We went up Vimy Ridge as Albertans and Nova Scotians.

During a ceremony Sunday, Canadian and French young people placed a pair of boots on the field for every soldier who died, and volunteers read their names out loud.

And there would be strategically more important battles, such as at Amiens, which many feel marked the beginning of the end of the "War to End All Wars".
