Keys: Oilers at Sharks, Game 4

The Edmonton Oilers have kept the San Jose Sharks off the scoreboard for six straight periods in taking a 2-1 Stanley Cup series lead.

The San Jose Sharks' Brent Burns (88) is chased by the Edmonton Oilers' Milan Lucic, right, during the second period in Game 3 of a first-round playoff series Sunday in San Jose. Certainly Talbot does not bear sole responsibility for the loss because he had no appreciable defensive help. Edmonton will head home with their tails between their legs and the Sharks in hot pursuit for game five on Thursday night in Rogers Place.

Game 4 of the series is being played on the two-year anniversary of Edmonton winning the draft lottery that gave the club the right to draft Connor McDavid, now the Oilers' captain. McDavid has a goal and an assist but has been effectively blanketed by the Sharks' defence the last two games. Game 5 is scheduled for Thursday in Edmonton. "I don't think it's a secret that as our key guys are getting healthier and feeling better we're starting to look better in that area".

A lot can transpire before Sunday night's face-off, so don't discount a possible Thornton return. "In one-goal games, it can go either way". Pavelski set up Melker Karlsson for the overtime goal in Game 1, but has been limited to only three shots on net the past two games.

The game started with a fast pace and much more physical play from the Sharks than they showed in Edmonton.

"I wanted to play Game 81", said Thornton.

They had 11 points Tuesday night. The Oilers weren't so lucky when they were called for having too many players on the ice in the third period.

San Jose produced four goals in the second period to eliminate any suspense in the outcome.

Martin Jones finished with 34 saves for the Sharks.

"I don't know if it's sunk in, but I'm sure throughout the day it will", said Kyla Lane who attended Tuesday's game in San Jose. Now, there is no shame in losing to a team such as San Jose. "Just keep to our fundamentals and we'd be fine, and you saw that tonight".

"Every game I play now I'm going to get better and just continue to get stronger", Thornton said. Edmonton Oilers goalie Cam Talbot, center, is beaten for a goal on a shot from San Jose Sharks' Logan Couture, not seen, as Joe Thornton (19), Oilers' Darnell Nurse (25) Sharks' Patrick Marleau (12) and Oilers' Ryan Nuge.

McDavid, the NHL's regular-season scoring leader, got his first National Hockey League playoff goal at the 10:31 mark of the third, streaking down the left side and launching a short-side wrist shot that eluded Jones.

"We got this giant Oiler cake made for him, they did a great job of it, and his receptionist said, "Oh, he's going to love this, you Canadians are so nice". He missed the final three games of the regular season and the first two playoff games after injuring his knee at Vancouver on April 2.

The Sharks were 0 for 6 with the man advantage and are 1 for 12 through the first two games.

"He puts himself in a spot where it's really hard to defend because you really need to pay attention to where his stick is at", Klefbom said of Pavelski, known for his net-front tips.
