Mullins Cheese picks up dairy farmers terminated by Grassland

U.S. President is wrong when he called Canada's dairy industry practices unfair, said Canada's Ambassador David MacNaughton on Tuesday.

Trump called out Canada by name Tuesday amid a brewing trade spat that has seen the USA dairy lobby accuse it of "systemic disregard" of its trade obligations. "It's another typical one-sided deal against the United States and it's not going to be happening for long", he said.

"We're going to get together and we're going to call Canada and we are going to ask them what happened", he said.

The U.S. -Canada dairy spat received more attention Tuesday when President Donald Trump addressed the issue during a speech in Wisconsin.

A spokeswoman for Canada's dairy industry said Tuesday night there have not been any new taxes on dairy imports.

He attached a February 2017 dairy outlook from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to his letter that he said indicates the "poor results" in the American dairy sector "are due to U.S. and global overproduction".

Canada has created a new Class 7 milk tariff for ultra-pasteurized milk that's used to make cheese.

Schumer, D-N.Y., an opponent of the 1994 North American Free Trade Act, has suggested that Canada violated NAFTA in its policies to raise tariffs on some American milk products.

"Unfortunately, it appears that while US processors were making multi-million dollar investments to meet the growing cross-border market for ultra-filtered milk, the Canadian dairy industry and government were plotting a trade war against our nation's dairy farmers", the governors wrote. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has blamed the Senate for delaying the confirmation of Trump's US trade representative. Cayuga Milk Ingredients in Auburn, New York, said it also lost all of its Canadian exports, a source of about 30% of overall sales.

The U.S. -Canadian dispute has spread to Minnesota, where officials say 19 dairy farms are affected, according to The Associated Press.

U.S. President Donald Trump set his sights on Canada's supply-managed dairy industry.

"It's absurd for the Canadian government to assert there is no relationship between its new Class 7 policy and the lost USA milk sales there".

Dumontier says it's ironic Trump is calling Canada protectionist when it comes to dairy, noting the US system of subsidizing farmers has created a market that's even more protectionist.

"The impact is our sales went to zero on April 1 because we have no sales into Canada at this point", said Ellis, CEO of Cayuga Milk Ingredients. This week, he reiterated his desire to negotiate or eliminate NAFTA, the agreement forming a bilateral trade bloc between the US, Mexico, and Canada. "Our government supports Canada's supply management system, dairy farmers, and the entire Canadian dairy industry".

"We're going to make some very big changes", he said.

"Together with other dairy exporting countries, including the USA, we have questioned these policies at WTO Committee on Agriculture meetings in Geneva as recently as last month", McClay said. "You're going to see more and more farmers losing their markets and losing the ability to continue operating is a growing concern".
