Norwegian is launching a new route from London Gatwick to Singapore Changi Airport later this year, with prices starting from £179 one way.

Initially flying four times a week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, Norwegian will increase the service to five times for the Northern winter season between late October and late March the following year. Flights from Changi Airport will commence on September 29.

It will use a 344-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft in a two-class configuration offering economy and premium cabins, the airport operator said.

Budget airline Norwegian made a decision to take long-haul global by launching the budget flight to Southeast Asia this winter.

BERLIN, April 20 Low cost carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle announced its first route linking London and Asia on Thursday, starting a service to Singapore as it seeks a slice of the market for business and leisure travellers on longer haul flights.

FlightGlobal schedules show that Norwegian will compete with Singapore Airlines, British Airways and Garuda Indonesia between Singapore and London.

Said Norwegian chief executive officer Bjorn Kjos: "Travel should be affordable for all so adding Singapore to our growing United Kingdom network will give passengers even more choice for afforable, quality travel to a range of global destinations".

More than 1.2 million passengers travelled between Singapore and London past year.

"I'm delighted that Norwegian has responded to this demand and added such a premier destination to its growing long haul network from Gatwick". Norwegian has been awarded the "World's best low-priced long-haul airline" for two consecutive years at the SkyTrax World Airline Awards. "With changing consumer preferences and an improvement in aircraft technology, low-priced carriers have taken the opportunity to expand into the long-haul market".
