Pence talks on trade in Japan overshadowed by threat of war

North Korea regularly threatens to destroy Japan, South Korea and the United States and it showed no let-up in its defiance after a failed missile test on Sunday, a day after putting on a huge display of missiles in Pyongyang.

On April 14, US media said that US President Donald Trump might order a strike against North Korea in the event Pyongyang chose to carry out another nuclear weapon test.

But now, Pence will try to reassure his jittery hosts that those decades-old security commitments are ironclad, a necessity made more acute as tensions rise over Pyongyang's latest missile test and Washington's refusal to rule out military action against the regime.

On Monday, Pence traveled to the tense Demilitarized Zone dividing North and South Korea, where he warned North Korea's leaders that after years of testing the USA and South Korea with its nuclear ambitions, "the era of strategic patience is over".

He also warned that U.S. military action could lead to an "all-out war", BBC reported.

"Those who would challenge our resolve or readiness should know, we will defeat any attack and beat any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective American response", Pence told 2,500 sailors aboard the USS Ronald Reagan at the US Yokosuka naval base in Tokyo Bay.

Speaking aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan on April 19, Pence said North Korea was "the most risky and urgent threat to peace and security in the Asia-Pacific" region.

The Trump team has signaled it intends to chart a new path when it comes to dealing with North Korea, though analysts say there aren't too many new options to try. I think you're not going to see him telegraphing how he's going to respond to any military or other situation going forward. "But if Trump has entered this so-called era of strategic impatience, just make sure if you do anything on the North, we don't end up as collateral damage".

The defence ministry said United States and South Korean air forces were conducting an annual training exercise, codenamed Max Thunder, until April 28.

One called for "dual-track" talks on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula - the top priority of the United States - and replacing the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War with a formal peace treaty, a key demand of Pyongyang.

Trump campaigned on an "America First" pledge, promising to overhaul trade agreements that he said hurt U.S.jobs.

Pence's economic discussions in Tokyo will be closely watched to see how hard a line Washington is prepared to take on trade.

"China continues to have both economic and political influence" over North Korea, Spicer said.

The U.S. military's Pacific Command announced on April 18 that the strike group had completed a shorter-than-initially scheduled training with Australia off its northwest coast.

But it's becoming increasingly clear that President Trump might not know the name of North Korea's leader.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley told United Nations reporters it was "up to North Korea to avoid further trouble". Beijing banned all coal imports from North Korea in February and more recently, Air China stopped flights between Beijing and Pyongyang.

On Saturday, North Korea tried to test a missile, but botched the launch.
