Speaking aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, a Nimitz class aircraft carrier now undergoing scheduled maintenance at its home port of Yokosuka, Pence said USA intentions remained unwavering in the face of the threat posed by the reclusive North, which has conducted a series of missile and nuclear tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions, most recently with a failed missile launch on Sunday.

"The only thing we need to hear from North Korea is that they are ending and ultimately dismantling their nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles program", Pence said aboard the USS Ronald Reagan at the Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan.

Tensions between the two nations have been fraught throughout Trump's presidency of nearly three months.

The U.S. military says an aircraft carrier participated in curtailed training with Australia before starting its journey north toward the Korean Peninsula.

Pence told business leaders before leaving Seoul that the Trump.

The U.S. Pacific Command said in a statement Wednesday that the USS Carl Vinson strike group is heading to the western Pacific "as a prudent measure".

As a candidate, President Donald Trump said he would be willing to speak with Kim.

Pence, who is on a 10-day visit to Asia, declined Wednesday to disclose whether the US had any role in Pyongyang's missile failure.

"The United States of America will always seek peace", he said.

Pence's visit to Indonesia is an important step "to reconfirm" the strategic partnership between the USA and Indonesia, Sumpter said.

"There's no question North Korea represents the most unsafe and most immediate threat in the Asia-Pacific and President Trump is determined to confront that threat by marshaling unprecedented cooperation with allies in the region and China and the world", Pence said. And the vice president believes American voters will be able to pinpoint accomplishments as it reflects on the administration's first 100 days.

"China is the source of energy, of ideas, of innovation, of expertise", she said, noting 95 of direct investment in North Korea come from China and that the North's exports mainly goes to China.

Australia plans to work closely with Japan, South Korea and the US, and with China, "to ensure that China can use its unique position".

Some economists have criticized the Trump administration's focus on trade deficits as a way of viewing US economic ties with the rest of the world.

Speculation that the U.S. may have used cyber capabilities to thwart the North Korean missile test comes at a time of escalating rhetoric between the two nations.

The vice president is on the second stop of a 10-day visit to the Asia-Pacific region after visiting South Korea, where he toured the demilitarized zone (DMZ), the heavily fortified border between North and South Korea.

He also said, "We are with you 100 percent", adding that the USA always seeks peace.

White House officials say the meetings in Tokyo are meant to forge a framework for future discussions after the US withdrew from a Pacific Rim trade pact.
