The heavily speculated Samsung Galaxy X may debut sooner than expected leaving the likes of LG, Oppo, Vivo, Lenovo on the race to be the first to release a foldable phone into the market.
But, why? Will customers prefer the Note 7 again?
Samsung halted sales of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones in October after a failed recall attempt, costing it about $5.5 billion in profit along with a blow to its reputation. Prices haven't been announced yet. Samsung recalled the replacements, too, and scrapped the phone.
Consumers can reserve Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8 online at www.cspire.com/devices or via phone through Customer Telesales at 1.855.CSPIRE4 for home delivery or pick up at any C Spire retail store once the flagship devices are available in retail channels.
The Samsung Galaxy X will come in two variants, the X1 and X1+, which may be unveiled at the IFA event in Berlin, the supposed venue for the Note 8's launch until Samsung chose to release the foldable phone first.
Both models have larger displays, meaning more drain on the battery. What remains of the top and bottom bezels are also left uncluttered by visible buttons or fingerprint sensors. The companion S8 features a 6.2 inch display, Samsung's biggest yet.
Like previous Galaxy flagships, the screen uses Super AMOLED tech, which means intensely rich colours and deep, dark blacks.
Would you like to see more Microsoft Edition Android flagships? For one thing, Samsung says Bixby will be able to handle any smartphone task now managed by touch.
It's also full of stuff you won't find on the iPhone. The system has a few parts: one is a standard, Siri-like voice control view, another is a list view of upcoming calendar appointments and reminders. Other apps will be able to adopt Bixby, but Samsung has had a mixed track record in getting other companies to support its home-brewed functions like Bixby. It will be powered by the same S8 chips, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 with a dual camera setup at the rear and a microSD card slot. A lot of features from the Galaxy S7 carries over - water-resistant body, wireless charging and a headphone jack.
Samsung will include premium earbuds from AKG, a brand it acquired when it bought Harman International. This makes it a total of two virtual assistants on the same phone. The DeX Station converts your phone into a giant computer screen. It's similar to what Microsoft offers on its Windows 10 phones. "And it's easy to hold in one hand". Existing owners can buy just the controller for about $40. They duo is now real, with only a couple of weeks between now and the release dates.
