Samsung tips huge jump in profit as heir to stand trial

Apple's rival Samsung Electronics forecast its best quarterly profit in more than three years in the January-March period, Reuters reported Friday. The root cause of the Note 7 recall was due to two separate battery issues and it seems Samsung is addressing the issue by reducing the battery to a 3,200mAh battery, which is 300mAh less than what the first variation of the Galaxy Note 7. The S8 was its first major smartphone launch since the fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 fiasco.

The photos shown here are of a Galaxy Note 7 that turned up in Vietnam, although it's not clear if the device was sold legitimately.

As the Galaxy Note 7 was discontinued, users who wanted to purchase the phone opted for a Galaxy S7 device instead.

The South Korean OEM also expects to maximize its Q1 2016 sales from 49.78 trillion won, (approximately $44 billion) in 2016, to 50 trillion won (approximately $44.2 billion) in Q1 2017. Though Samsung has not spilled the beans regarding what will be unveiled, most likely the company is going to launch the Galaxy C7 Pro or the Galaxy C5 Pro smartphone in the country.

If the global chip business continues to post robust performances, Samsung's annual operating profit may hover far above 40 trillion won this year coupled with smartphone sales, they added.

While some companies have been struggling financially for quite a bit now, Samsung has been able to hold strong over the last couple of years.

Lee's defence lawyers however said the payments to Choi were charitable contributions for sports and culture development that Samsung was obliged to make under pressure from officials, and not bribes.

The trial of Samsung Electronics' vice chairman Lee Jae-yong has gotten underway following a pretrial hearing last month.

The fact that Jay Y Lee, heir to South Korea's largest corporation, Samsung Group, is embroiled in charges that he bribed a confidante of former South Korean president Park Geun-hye and conspired to cover it up, did not, however affect investor confidence in the group.

The verdict is expected to be delivered in late May.
