US President Donald Trump praised China for its help in pressuring North Korea, while defending his softening stance on trade and other issues with the Asian giant, in an interview that aired Tuesday.

The U.S.is trying to ratchet up pressure on North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

During the last two administrations, Pyongyang made enough progress on nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles that, experts predict, it could strike the USA mainland - possibly even the East Coast - in two to three years.

"We appreciate the challenging time in which the people of Japan live with increasing provocation across the Sea of Japan". You read (Bill) Clinton's book and he said "Oh, we made such a great peace deal" and it was a joke.

"We'll be conducting more missile tests on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis", NK Vice Foreign Minister Han Song-Ryol said.

As tensions continue to rise, the world remains fixated on the nuclear showdown between North Korea and the United States, the subject of the week's Rasmussen Minute.

"It is encouraging to see China continue to move forward and join us in this effort to control North Korea", White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters yesterday.

Pointing to the quarter-century since the U.S. first confronted the North over its attempts to build nuclear weapons, the vice president said this had been followed by a period of patience.

"The United States will strengthen its presence in the Asia Pacific", he said.

Later Monday, Pence reiterated in a joint statement alongside South Korean Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn that "all options are on the table" to deal with threat and said any use of nuclear weapons by Pyongyang would be met with "an overwhelming and effective response".

Speaking to USA and Japanese troops on board the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier Wednesday, he called North Korea the most urgent and risky threat to the peace and security of the Asia-Pacific region.

"But at the same time", the prime minister said, "dialogue for the sake of dialogue is valueless and it is necessary for us to exercise pressure North Korea so that it comes forward and engages in this serious dialogue".

"I don't want to telegraph what I'm doing or what I'm thinking", he said.

Some economists have criticized the Trump administration's focus on trade deficits as a way of viewing USA economic ties with the rest of the world.

Donald Trump has warned North Korea it has "gotta behave" as the U.S. agreed to the early deployment of a missile defence system in the region. "Now is the time to stop", he said.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests, including two previous year.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi repeated China's line that the crisis could only be resolved by diplomacy. Mr Trump has repeatedly expressed unhappiness at the weakening yen and Japan's $63 billion (€59 billion) trade surplus with the United States.

"I'm, like, a smart person", he said.

Even as Washington's US$69 billion (S$96 billion) trade deficit with Tokyo cast a shadow over their talks, the two leaders, who will meet again by the year end, pledged to boost cooperation in sectors such as energy and transport, where "improved commercial relations will promote mutual economic benefits and job creation in both countries".
