Aaron Hernandez found dead in prison with Bible verse written across forehead

Hernandez was already serving a life sentence when he was acquitted. He recently won an acquittal for Hernandez in his double murder trial.

"The family and legal team is shocked and surprised at the news of Aaron's death", Jose Baez, Hernandez's attorney, said in a statement.

The former National Football League star's lawyer, Jose Baez, is one of the many people shocked that his client would have taken his own life days after his acquittal of double murder.

William T. Kennedy, who represents the families of de Abreu and Furtado, said their wrongful-death lawsuits will still go forward, only this time against Hernandez's estate.

Hernandez's appellate attorney, John M. Thompson, revealed that he intends to file all the appropriate paperwork once Aaron's death certificate is available.

Fallon said he's not aware of any suicide note written by Hernandez.

Governor Baker said he has full faith and confidence in the commissioner of the D.O.C and that no one should assume anything until the results of the investigation are complete. That means Hernandez will likely have his conviction for the murder of Odin Lloyd - in addition to the gun charge associated with it - overturned. He was found hanged with a bedsheet tied to a window, and he had tried to block his cell door from the inside. Prison officials said he committed suicide. Even so, he says one death is one too many.

Baez explained that Hernandez's legal team had made arrangements to have his brain released to the university, but that the medical examiner's office suddenly chose to withhold it.

Hernandez's body was released to the Faggas Funeral Home in Watertown following the autopsy. But Baez says the office has not returned the brain. He said Hernandez's family has also commissioned its own independent autopsy.

Baez declined to comment further Thursday.

Hernandez had been housed in a single cell in the general population unit at the maximum-security Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts.

While Simpson's life story continues to play out, Hernandez's life story has come to an end. The Patriots released him hours after his arrest in connection to the murder.

The 5,800-square-foot, five-bedroom, seven-bathroom house he bought near Gillette Stadium for $1.3 million in 2012 is still up for sale. The Internal Revenue Service has a $117,395 tax lien on the property. Simpson was found innocent and set free; Hernandez was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. The District Attorney for Worcester County, the site of the prison where Hernandez died, on Thursday said Hernandez's official cause of death was asphyxia by hanging. State police spokesman Dave Procopio also cites the "active" investigation.

According to Baez, the Hernandez family expected to receive the brain Thursday morning so they could give it to BU.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Hernandez spoke with his fiancee hours before his apparent suicide.

The couple had a 4-year-old daughter together. It holds that is unfair to the defendant or to his or her survivors if a conviction is allowed to stand before they had a chance to clear their names on appeal, in case some kind or error or other injustice was determined to have occurred at trial, Healy said.
