Facebook launches augmented reality Camera Effects Platform

Now the tech giant, which has almost 1.9 billion monthly active users, is starting in earnest to build the camera into what the ceo described as "the first mainstream augmented reality platform".

The new immersive VR experience is part of the company's overall goal to bring people together, but connecting via a virtual world might make us physically farther apart. Facebook moves F8 Conference to San Jose for more space. That's where the magic of virtual reality comes in.

Have you noticed that most Facebook apps these days have a camera button built in?

Franklin touted the app's machine learning technology for facial recognition, and then producing a silly-looking avatar loosely resembling the person.

The most drastic change is still to come. Facebook is making the tools available freely, but will initially distribute only the work of 6 partners.

Manchester United is one of the first brands to partner with the newly launched Facebook developer platform for augmented reality, Camera Effects.

That's seen the introduction of chat bots to enable users to talk to businesses as well as games users can play in conversation windows - both of these areas have been updated this year.

You can also pull in photos from your Facebook account and enlarge them on the screen.

Zuckerberg imagines AR experiences breaking down into three major categories: augmenting objects in the physical world with additional information, layering virtual objects onto reality like a board game or a television, and enhancing objects that are already there with extra effects. The app also has a virtual selfie stick to take pictures of your VR moments and share them on your timeline. Users will be able to view a Space from their smartphone, and have their video call shown inside the virtual reality environment. Once you've got your VR space loaded up, it's a quick jaunt through a few menus to invite some friends.

Facebook gave their reasoning for the announcement.

The company launched Facebook Spaces at F8, the company's developer conference, on Tuesday.

While the new tools and features are impressive, analyst Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research cautioned that that "most of them won't be in users' hands anytime soon".
