FDNY firefighter dies after fall from roof in Queens

William Tolley a 14-year veteran of the FDNY died in the line of duty during a fire in Queens

William Tolley a 14-year veteran of the FDNY died in the line of duty during a fire in Queens

Officials say 42-year-old William Tolley was on the roof during routine operations when he fell.

"Everyone is in a state of shock, grief", the mayor said.

Tolley was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Bushwick, Brooklyn in serious condition, but he later succumbed to his injuries, fire officials said. "To his family we say, we stand with you, not only today, but the days ahead and for years to come", de Blasio said.

The fire broke out on the second floor of an apartment located at 1615 Putnam Ave in Ridgewood around 2:30 p.m.

Nigro said it's common practice for firefighters to head to the roof to open doors and ventilate a burning building to save people above the fire.

Visibly emotional, Commissioner Nigro said Tolley leaves behind a wife and an 8-year-old daughter.

The cause of the fall is under investigation, Nigro said.

NYPD commissioner James O'Neil tweeted thoughts and prayers for the fallen firefighter.

The fire was under control by about 3 p.m., but a number of streets in the area were still closed hours later and there was a heavy FDNY presence at the scene.

The dead FDNY member "fell off the roof and died for nothing", the source told the Daily News.

"I seen the fireman go up the ladder, go in the white thing - the bucket - and then the ladder shakes. A worker nearby got sick when he saw it". The last firefighter killed in the line of duty was Deputy Chief Michael Fahy, who died in an explosion at a marijuana grow house in the Bronx on September 27, 2016.

Earlier on Thursday, Fahy's name was added to the Department Line of Duty Memorial Wall at the FDNY's headquarters.
