Harry Redknapp appointed Birmingham manager following Gianfranco Zola's resignation

Steve Cotterill has been appointed as the assistant manager at Birmingham City after the club brought in Harry Redknapp as their new boss.

He is the former manager of AFC Bournemouth, West Ham United, Portsmouth, Tottenham Hotspur and QPR.

The side are now lying 20th in the SkyBet Championship, 3 points above the relegation zone after Monday's disappointing 2-0 defeat to Burton Albion.

Redknapp has only three games to save Birmingham from the dreaded drop out of the Championship, with the defeat to Burton leaving the free falling Blues three points above the relegation zone.

The 70-year-old, who has managed seven English clubs and overseen a total of 1380 League fixtures, is still brimming with enthusiasm.

Redknapp's appointment was announced just 16 hours after Zola's departure, but the length of his contract has not yet been disclosed. I ain't got a magic wand.

He said: "I could easily have said goodbye to it all but I love it".

"They've got us in it, they've got to get us out of it!"

The former Tottenham manager has agreed to take over until the end of the season and it is all so new to him.

However under former Italy global Zola, the Midlands club suffered a dramatic slump in form that saw Birmingham manage just two wins in 22 matches.

His first match as manager comes at cross-city rivals Aston Villa on Sunday.

"I went in there and said I don't want anything but I'll come and do it".

He said: "Birmingham are a team I've not see much of, seen nothing of really, they've not been on TV much this year". They are in a precarious position and we have got the worst goal difference as well.

"If they don't stay up then obviously... you know". He said: "I drove to London, had a meeting for 15 minutes and said 'Sure I will come and do it -no problem".

"We're going to have to win one of the three games at least".
